Picking a tool as a handyman
Most handyman businesses are one or two people doing small jobs, so the tool has to be cheap, call-first and strict about what it pays for. VibeAds fits that: one handyman campaign with task-level ad groups, a negative list for DIY, tool-buying and job-seeker searches, call tracking, and Jobber lead sync, from $20/month. Local Services Ads list "Handyman" as a category, which makes them worth a look for pay-per-lead calls. Franchise owners should start with the franchisor's program.

The keyword trap: specialist repairs
Our handyman keyword pull for 25 cities kept pulling in specialist trades. About 56% of head-term volume was garage door, furnace, appliance, window, door or drywall repair, against 44% for searches containing "handyman":
| Keyword | Cities priced | Median low bid | Median high bid | What they want |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| handyman | 25 | $4.40 | $12.43 | Hire a handyman |
| handyman near me | 25 | $4.37 | $14.17 | Hire, nearby |
| handyman service | 25 | $3.78 | $11.56 | Hire |
| handyman services near me | 13 | $4.66 | $15.74 | Hire, nearby |
| furniture assembly services | 4 | $5.70 | $12.88 | Small task |
| drywall repairman near me | 10 | $7.28 | $25.16 | Specific repair |
| window repairman near me | 23 | $6.44 | $19.74 | Specific repair |
| home appliance repair near me | 25 | $4.40 | $15.26 | Appliance specialist |
| garage door repairman near me | 25 | $18.57 | $74.72 | Garage door specialist |
Bid figures are Google Keyword Planner top-of-page bid estimates pulled for 50 US cities in September 2026. They are what advertisers bid to reach the top of the page, not what a click costs you; your real cost per click is usually lower and moves with Quality Score.
"Garage door repairman near me" bid $18.57 to $74.72, about 6 times the high bid for "handyman" ($12.43). Two reasons not to chase it: those searchers want a specialist with parts on the truck, and garage door services in the US go through Google's Advanced Verification (policy). Furnace and appliance work may also need licensing in your state. Bid on specialist tasks only if you are qualified, and give them their own ad group so the cost stays visible.
Better handyman tasks to bid on are the ones people do not want a specialist for: furniture assembly ($12.88 high bid), drywall patches, TV mounting, door adjustments, small repairs around the house.
| City | Median low bid | Median high bid | Priced keywords | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Highest | Denver | $4.64 | $20.63 | 63 |
| Highest | Fort Worth | $4.40 | $20.00 | 58 |
| Highest | Seattle | $5.83 | $17.26 | 61 |
| Middle of 25 cities | $4.31 | $13.87 | ||
| Lowest | Philadelphia | $3.21 | $9.80 | 75 |
| Lowest | New York | $3.25 | $10.04 | 176 |
| Lowest | Chicago | $3.02 | $10.71 | 126 |
City pages: Baltimore, Fort Worth, San Diego.
Negatives
| Group | From VibeAds' handyman list |
|---|---|
| DIY | diy home repair, home repair tips, fix it yourself, home improvement ideas |
| Tools | tool set buy, power tools buy, drill buy, saw buy |
| Careers and licensing | handyman salary, handyman jobs, handyman license, handyman insurance |
| Bigger contractors and apps | general contractor, construction company, handy app |
VibeAds keeps the word "job" out of the universal job-seeker filter for handyman campaigns, because "small job" and "odd jobs" are real customer searches.
Landing page
List the tasks you do and the ones you do not, with a minimum charge if you have one. A photo of you, your service area, and a "text me a photo of the job" option work well for small repairs. Put the phone number first. VibeAds builds the page and scores incoming calls (call tracking video).
Season
Our planner's handyman curve is flat: within about 20% of an average month all year, peaking in April and May.
Limits
- No Nextdoor, Thumbtack, Angi or Meta management.
- Jobber is the only field-service integration; Housecall Pro and others are not connected.
- Not a licensing check; you decide which specialist tasks you can legally advertise.
- Reviews happen twice a day. On Max, only small bid changes and wasted-search blocks are hands-free, after a campaign's first week; everything else asks first.
Should a handyman bid on "garage door repair"?
Usually not. In our data those searches cost several times more than handyman searches, the searcher wants a specialist, and garage door services in the US require Google's Advanced Verification before ads can run. If you do garage door work, complete Advanced Verification first and keep it in its own ad group.
Are Local Services Ads good for handymen?
They can be, since "Handyman" is listed and LSA charges per lead instead of per click. The job mix in LSA leads can be broad, so be clear in your profile about which tasks you take.
